For perfecting your pout and providing your lips with a pop of colour, lip blushing is a new beauty treatment you’re going to want to know about.
For decades, cosmetic tattooing has been evolving into an art form and lip blushing is one of the latest industry innovations. It is a method that tints the lips, using a small needle to infuse semi-permanent colour. This is sometimes referred to as lip tattooing because the professionals who perform this service typically use a tattoo machine to inject the pigment into the lips.
However, unlike the permanent lip-tattooing procedures of the past, semi-permanent lip tattoo blushing utilises a lighter touch to create more detailed shading and a more natural look. It is similar to other modern cosmetic tattoo trends like ombre brow tattoo, just for the lips.

Lips with dark pigmentation are particularly common for people of colour - fitzpatric scale 3-6 generally have more melanin production and lips can often look two-toned. If your lips are brown or blue/purple (even if it is ever so slightly), the blushing process will be a bit different compared to lip blush on clients without dark pigmentation in their lips. We must select warmer, brighter colours (like the example in our photo) to even out and lift the dark tones in your lips. Don’t stress! Your lips will heal into a soft and natural colour. It usually takes a couple of sessions to create an even and neutralised canvas. We will then work towards your desired goal colour.
Dark lips require a minimum of two sessions and each session is scheduled 8 to 10 weeks apart to allow the lips to fully regenerate and even out in colour. Dark lips go through different stages of healing and sometimes can appear temporarily darker or patchy before they lighten and even out. A bit of patience is well worth the results.

It is recommended to eat something before your appointment to make sure your blood sugar levels stay stable during the procedure.
••
Avoid alcohol for 24hrs before your appointment. Alcohol can thin the blood, which can cause the skin to be hypersensitive, and bleed/ bruise easily.
••
Avoid blood thinning medications for 72hrs before your appointment. This includes ibuprofen, aspirin and fish oil tablets. Please consult your doctor if this is an issue.
••
If you have EVER had a cold sore (even just once in your life), you will need to take an antiviral medication prescribed by your doctor (like Acyclovir 800mg) at least 3 days before and at least 3 days after your lip blush.
••
You may like to take an antihistamine tablet before your procedure. This can help reduce the swelling. Consult with your pharmacist or doctor first.
••
If considering lip fillers, it would be best to have your lips tattooed first and your fillers injected after. If you implant colour too soon you will be implanting colour above the natural line. When the lips shrink and return to normal size, the lip line will be off.
Please ensure that you purchase your own numbing cream specifically for cosmetic tattooing from a compound chemist.
Swelling right after the treatment is completely normal. It will go down within the next few hours.
Bright colours like red lipstick within the first few days are completely normal. After peeling is over, it is completely normal for the lips to look very pale and somewhat uneven.
Don't be alarmed! The pigment will continue to show and even themselves out within the next 4 - 7 weeks.
If you have melanin lips, you may also experience hyperpigmentation (look even darker) or hypopigmentation (look light in certain parts). Don't be alarmed! The melanin and pigment will eventually blend into each other within the next 7-8 weeks. A third touch up may be needed depending on how dark the original lips are.
Lip Blush is a form of semi-permanent tattoo that is done to correct asymmetry, enhance the natural shape and add a pop of colour on your lips. The colour is always intense for the first few days directly after the session, and this will heal to be up to 60-70% lighter after 1 week.
A second session, known as the touch-up, is recommended at 6-8 weeks to perfect any areas that might not have healed well.
Even though the category name is “permanent makeup”, a semi-permanent pigment is applied to the top layer of skin (epidermis) verses a traditional tattoo ink for the deeper skin layers. Traditional ink makes the makeup look less natural as well as being far more permanent. There is also a consistency difference too. Pigment ink is thicker than the watery traditional ink, allowing for a more natural finish. The downside to pigment though is it's semi-permanent nature. It can be exfoliated out of the skin after 2-3 years as it is only applied to the upper skin layer. Touch-ups are therefore required to maintain the style long term.
If you suffer from cold sores it is highly recommended that you take anti-viral medication prescribed from your doctor or from the chemist!
Dark lip neutralisation is suitable for any person looking to enhance and level-out their lip tone and is a popular treatment for both men and women. Clients who are within the Fitzpatrick Scale 3-6 may experience darker tones within their lips. To neutralise the darker tones, this may take anywhere from 1-4 sessions. Please be aware of this before you book! You will not be able to achieve your desired colour in one session only. It is recommended that warmer colours are used, rather than cooler-toned colours.
Blush lips can give you a fuller lip effect that can last anywhere between 2-3 years depending on the intensity of the colour that you are wanting to have applied.
One of our favourite benefits of this treatment is that it can boost confidence in those who may have thin, pale, dark, or scarred lips. It is often a treatment that is empowering for people who have had injuries to their lips or mouth that left them with scars, as it can reshape their lips and completely transform their look.
Yes and No. Yes, it will give you definition, shape, and colour which ultimately gives you the bigger lip look, however, with blush lips we can't tattoo over the border of your natural lips.
If you’re wondering what the difference is between lip blush vs. fillers, here’s a quick primer. Lip fillers give you temporarily plumper lips by injecting them with a dermal filler. Lip blushing enhances your lips’ natural shade by adding pigment to make them subtly bolder and brighter and more full with shape adjustment. Both treatments can help you achieve the gorgeous lips of your dreams, but you should always get the lip blush first.
Any specialist will give you the same answer if you ask about getting lip blush before or after fillers. The first reason has to do with how long each treatment lasts. Lip blushing can last up to three years without any touch-ups. Once you get the treatment, all you have to do is enjoy your beautifully tinted lips and get a touch-up every year or so. On the other hand, lip fillers aren’t quite as long-lasting and will require multiple touch-ups in the amount of time it takes for your lip blush to fade. Fillers are also—hands down—more expensive. Get your lip blushing taken care of first, and you won’t have to worry about it again. You may also find that fillers are no longer needed with your shape adjustment and new colour.
The second (and perhaps more important) reason to get your lip blush before fillers is that lip fillers will change the shape of your lips. This means that lip blush applied over lip fillers might not look right once the fillers have faded forcing you to continue to get them. In a worst-case scenario, your lip blush might even appear skewed or warped in your face’s natural state, requiring further touch-ups. A professional cosmetic artist will always treat unaltered, natural skin, so definitely schedule your lip-blushing appointment before the lip fillers!
Swelling, minor bruising or bleeding, itchiness, redness and pain are common side effects that should go away in the few days following the procedure. If you experience more severe side effects, such as excessive swelling, increasing pain or any pus oozing from the lips, contact your doctor immediately. Prevention is the best method to protect against these harmful side effects. Follow all of your after-care instructions carefully.
Your lips will appear a lot darker and intense than what they will look like once healed. You need to trust the healing process! Over the first few days they will be at their darkest. They might scab and flake, this is completely normal. While they heal, this will fade to reveal a much lighter colour.
The lips tend to fade around 50-70%.
Please keep in mind that everyone’s skin will heal differently.
The true colour of the tattoo will not be revealed until after 6 weeks.
The touch-up is then completed at 6-8 weeks to perfect any areas that need some extra attention, as well as add more colour if needed
